Kampen

The view from the IJssel on the harbour, the town quay and the historical buildings of Kampen were a source of inspiration for artists. The Hanseatic city of Kampen at the mouth of the IJssel was once strategically located at the Zuiderzee and was nicknamed "Rotterdam of the Middle Ages". Everything in the city reminds you of that time, such as the Old City Hall, the Cellebroederspoort and the Nieuwe Toren. Art and culture can be found in the Stadsarchief, the Stedelijk Museum and the Huys der Kunsten. In winter, the inner city changes into one big open-air theatre during Kerst in Oud Kampen.

National Park Nieuw Land

The Netherlands' newest national park was created by people and is literally at the bottom of the Zuiderzee. Here you will also find a true bird paradise: the Oostvaardersplassen. The marshland area combines rough grasslands, reed plains, woods and lakes. Although southern Flevoland was only created some 50 years ago, birds and other animals know how to find it. Cormorants and spoonbills live there, but also bats, deer and foxes. Even the white-tailed eagle has been breeding there since 2006. Konik horses and Heck cattle also graze there.
