The Rich History of Harderwijk

Harderwijk was granted city rights as early as 1231 and grew into an important Hanseatic city during the Middle Ages. Thanks to its location on what was then the Zuiderzee, the city flourished through trade and fishing. The historic city wall, old mansions, and the iconic Vischpoort still serve as reminders of this rich past!

Did you know that...

  • Was it a college town in the past?
  • Did Harderwijk mint its own money?
  • was she famous for her fresh eel?
  • It's teeming with Michelin stars?
  • Did the salty sea turn into a freshwater lake?
